The Ilmari 2003 Balloon -project

2002-07-31: Kickoff (?)

Heikki Lahtivirta (OH2LH / OH2BSH) presented his "Super-Ilmari-2003" project thoughts at the AMSAT-OH group meeting.

Discussions on the topic are intended to be done at the AMSAT-OH discussion list, see the link at the menu on left. (These foils are of rendered images, and in finnish. Where possible, translations are given below each of them.)

Super Ilmari-2003

Not quite to the Space!

Construction experiences for future Satellite projects.

We have long traditions of this type!

  • Goals:
    • Activate ILMARI again at the sky
    • Activate new users, and new modes
  • Payloads:
    • Linear transponder, 70cm in, 2m out
    • GPS+ARPS-TX (70cm) (interference caused transponder change)
    • 1.3 GHz ATV TX
    • Beacons:
      • 3.5 MHz CW telemetry (call, location, altitude)
      • 145 MHz translator mid-frequency CW telemetry
      • 436 MHz AX.25/APRS telemetry
  • Instrumentations for the telemetry:
    • Battery voltage
    • translator output power (145 MHz)
    • AGC
    • temperatures inside, and outside

NOTE: Latter the translator frequency plans were flipped around due to RFI from 70cm APRS Tx.

  • Payload largest/most complex of Ilmari flights so far
  • Main payload is 70cm->2m linear translator, with +-50 kHz bandwidth. This accomodates simultaneously about 25 SSB stations. Mid-frequency will have a beacon giving CW telemetry of equipment functioning.
  • Secondary payloads are telemetry beacon at 80m, APRS beacon at 436 MHz, GPS receiver, and ATV transmitter at 1.3 GHz.
  • ATV transmitter is not running all the time, but in 15/45 second duty-cycle. Image content is live video from onboard cameras.
  • Functions are controlled/monitored by Clement Engineering MIM module

NOTE: Latter the translator frequency plans were flipped around due to RFI from 70cm APRS Tx.

  • Things to find out:
    • What will be system total mass
    • How large a balloon is needed
    • Power budget ? (multiple power sources ?)
    • Optimum mechanical construction (mass, impact shock tolerance, extreme cold survival, water tightness, floating) ?
    • Various licenses and permits ?
    • Schedule ?
    • Work-group people ?
    • Launch/tracking/recovery teams and their responsibilities ?

  • Ideas and thoughts for the project:
    • Ilmari internal chassis and compartments made of thin double-glad FR4 board
    • Some circuitry can be assembled directly to chasis in rats-nest style
    • External shell of Styrox/Styrofoam box
    • Power supplies are Lithium primary batteries from spent single-use polaroid cameras, or something like that.
    • Colour camera module ?
    • Ascent speed adjustment with additional weight ?
    • Radar reflector of aluminium foil on top of Styrox ?
    • Ground-station software ?

  • Payload construction:
    • Translator to be built "from the scratch"
    • 80m beacon exists (by -3MCK)
    • Vaisala module exists, to be tuned into suitable frequency, plus small modifications
    • GPS RX; FastraX or alike, ready module with NMEA output.
    • MIM we have, APRS and CW telemetry SW exists in OH6 region ?
    • 1.3 GHz ATX Tx to be built, camera module from shop
    • Metering instrumentation
    • Power supply to be distributed (independent supplies!)

  • Resourcing:
    • Chief (scheduling, kicking people to do their thing): OH2LH
    • Payload manager (all payloads): OH2AUE
    • Constructors (makers of things): OH2KTB, OH2AUE, OH1MRH, OH2HOR, OH2HMS, OH1HHC, OH2LAK, OH1LIY, OH3MW, OH2LKV, etc..
    • Mechanics manager (makes sure that everything fits): OH2KTB
    • Acquisition (begs/buys parts): OH2LH
    • Regulatory contacts (permits/licenses): OH2LFM, OH6VM ??
    • Recovery honcho (track, search, and retrieval): OH2JBB, OH2LFM
    • Documentation and PR: (design, and construction documentation, publicity): PR: OH2MW, DOC: OH1MQK
    • Test manager (test design and execution): OH2JMS

  • Scheduling:
    • TARGET: SUPERILMARI to fly in July 2003, or ??
      1. Final design by 10/2002
      2. Permits and licenses by 1/2003
      3. Chassis mechanics by: 2/2003
      4. Payloads ready, tested: 4/2003
      5. Integration complete: 5/2003
      6. Finishing and flight readiness 6/2003
      7. FLIGHT: 7/2003
